Gary Phillips

It’s been many years since I’ve had Gary in a class but I still remember his beautiful acrylic paintings built of meticulous washes. For more than 18 years he’s worked with clients from across the country and across the globe. His client list includes Hershey Foods, AAA World Magazine, Scholastic Magazine, Runner's World Magazine, McGraw-Hill, Highlights for Children, Boyd's Mill Press, Prentice Hall, Backpacker Magazine Ranger Rick Magazine, Scott Foresman, Springhouse Corporation, among others.

It's All Worth It...

Sometimes getting a letter like this makes it worth working in my basement with only spiders for company.
Dear "Mattaleh"(if I may take the liberty)
I am more than 20- years older than you, but our youth is quite similar. My Russian born father and Polish born mother's first candy store, where we lived in back, was on Sutter
Ave, I think near Elton or Linwood Sts.
Upwardly mobile immigrants as they were, they then bought on Pitkin Ave, near Van Sicklen Ave. This time we lived in various roach infested apts nearby. My neighborhoods being more in East New York, than Brownsville. This geography, in no way diminishes how much TWoCentsPlain resonated for me.
I think you captured more than the "plain", but the true flavors of that childhood.
Unfortunately, my father died when I was 9 years old, so I did not know him as you knew yours.But, I have a slight recollection of a similar personality.
So, not to "hack a chinek". Thank you for a bittersweet reminiscence.

The Curious Case of Kevin Cornell

How time flies. It’s been 10 years since Kevin graduated from KU.
A trip to my local Barnes & Nobel a few years ago was where I picked up a copy of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and became reacquainted with his work. It’s a complex work, beautifully illustrated. He now makes his living drawing and writing on such websites as www.bearskinrug.co.uk and www.thesuperest.com. He’s also illustrating books for children and adults, and contributing to such notable publications as McSweeney’s Quarterly, Maisonneuve Magazine, and the online publication A List Apart. His latest graphic novel is the Superest.

Pete Hoey

It’s a pleasure to feature the work of Pete Hoey, a 1982 KU graduate. I remember his beautiful, quirky, scratchboard illustration. His work is still beautiful and quirky but digital. The editorial and advertising work he creates will blow you away.
He works together with his sister Maria. Growing up with a 13-year age spread in a large family, they didn’t connect artistically until both were out of school. They began working together in Washington D.C. as Coin-Op Studio in 1997, doing illustrations for a wide range of editorial and advertising clients.
Over the years, their scope has expanded to include television animation and publishing their own comics and flip books. Working via the internet has allowed both of them to work remotely. Peter lives on the coast of northern California with his wife and two dogs. Maria
lives with her husband in New York.

Back from the Museum

Great experience at The Museum of Jewish Heritage. I was honored to be on a panel with Ann Kuschner and Erin EInhorn– outstanding authors. I was a little scared that I'd go over my 10 minute opening time allotment but I went 10 minutes 1 second...Yes!!! (I was actually timed.)
The trip back to Allentown was a trip from Hell. Instead of arriving at 12:00 AM, I arrived at 2:30– some kind of traffic jam. Oy, my head, my stomach.

Museum of Jewish Heritage Appearance

Looking forward to participating in a talk and panel discussion this Wednesday, May 11, 7 P.M. at the Museum of Jewish Heritage, 36 Battery Place in NY. It’s a wonderful location. When you look out of some Museum windows you can almost touch the Statue of Liberty.

I remember Tom as a talented student and all around great guy. I wonder if he remembers his senior illustration project about geriatric superheroes?
After graduating from KU in 1996, he took a full time graphic design position for five years before finding his current full-time illustration position at Merion Matters in King of Prussia, PA. He’s been working there for almost 10 years and has the opportunity to create editorial illustrations for a wide variety of healthcare publications. He’s also enjoyed an abundance of freelance opportunities over the past two years for a diverse group of clients including Nicktoons, Lucasfilm, Paramount, IDW Comics, Don Bluth Studios, Disney, and Penguin Books.

New York Society Library

Back from the 2010-2011 New York City Book Awards. It was an honor receiving the Award for Memoir. I met some wonderful people including Roger Pasquier, Chair of the Awards Committee, Susan Henshaw Jones, President and Director of the Museum of the City of New York and host for the awards, as well as, Mark Bartlett, Head Librarian at the New York Library Society and Sara Holliday, Events Coordinator at the library.
I got to give an acceptance speech (now I know how getting an Oscar feels like– well kinda.)
The only regret I have is not trying the lox wrapped around asparagus– maybe next time...
